Youth Symphony Fail

Jared's end of the year concert for Jordan Youth Symphony was held at a large building owned by the district that they use for technical training and secondary learning classes.  When we got there we learned that there was no auditorium or anything, just a large open courtyard with a few dozen chairs set up on one side and the orchestra setting up at the other.  There were not enough seats for parents, so Chuck and I just grabbed some chairs from an empty room and pulled them up alongside.

We immediately noticed that all the percussionists were standing around in the back corner but there weren't any instruments.  There were only bells, a snare drum, and a few hand instruments like tambourine and triangle.  Through some body language communication across the room, Jared shrugged at us and indicated that he would only be playing in one song. They performed six numbers total but because they didn't have instruments the seven percussionists just sat around for most of the concert.  So even though Jared attended every practice he wasn't able to play in the concert.

By the comments made at the beginning of the concert and a large roped off area right in the front, it became clear that the performance was for the School Board who were having a meeting in that building that night, and not really for the parents at all. That is why they chose a venue that had no percussion instruments available (usually a school or auditorium provides the large instruments like timpani, base drum, and marimba).   So the performance went on, the School Board came out halfway through and sat in their police taped area right in the front and Jared was able to play in the very last number.

I was furious. Generally, I am not a complainer, but I was beyond angry that my child's ability to participate was squelched by politics, so first I went to the man who was introduced as being over the arts for the district and complained to him. Then I went up to Jared's band teacher, who was one of the directors. She didn't seem to care so then I went up to a member of the School Board, who I had met a few times, and complained to him. I told him that this was our end of the year concert for parents and my son being able to play was sacrificed so the directors could suck up to the School Board.  I finished by saying "Aren't students more important than school board members?"   He heartily agreed with me and said he would make sure it didn't happen again.   So hopefully things will be better next year, too late for us though.

I'm adding a short video. The sound quality is bad, but you can hear Jared on the snare drum.  (you can see the other percussionists walking around in the background because they have nothing to play)

It's been a pretty fun week here at our house.  I had a few lunch dates and hosted a game day with friends for an afternoon (we played Betrayal at House on the Hill - which was a big hit).  Jared got to take a day off school to play some concerts with the Youth Symphony, we learned that he doesn't have to take a 3rd year of Chinese next year (hooray!), and we finally got around to measuring Jared to learn that he has grown 4 inches in the past year and now is an inch taller than I.  Ruth got called in to interview for a city service scholarship and sang a solo at her musical dance theater concert (she did awesome). And Chuck and I went on a date night to the Jordan Temple Openhouse (a few nice changes there but not as many as I expected).

On Wednesday I took a day off of work and drove downtown to attend the comic con press conference with my costuming club.   There were maybe 150 cosplayers there and we basically marched around, clapped when they made announcements of guests, and then stayed after for pictures, lots and lots of pictures. My picture was on several of the local news websites as well as printed in the Tribune.

HEROIC

We had a full day on Saturday.  In the morning Ruth competed in the Freedom Festival speech competition.  She submitted her speech via video and was selected as a finalist.  She got 3rd place in the competition and was happy with how she did.   Then we drove up to the U of U to attend an orientation for the Business Scholars program where we learned what cool experiences she'll have in the program but also how expensive it will be.

Spring Break!

It's been spring break at our house so the teens and I have all been off school/work.   Chuck, unfortunately, didn't get any time off work, so we didn't plan any big trips or vacations. It was also rainy and cool most days so we spent our days sleeping in and hanging out around the house.   We did go shopping a few days to try to update those spring wardrobes (with mixed success).   We also spent an afternoon at a little museum a few towns over, which proved to be a fun little getaway.  On Saturday we had a late family Easter gathering. It was fun to sit and visit, and the kids had fun spending time with cousins.

We took advantage of a photobooth at the museum.
Ruth and her cousins went out and did a fun photo shoot together.

Happy Easter Everyone,

We had a pretty chill Easter this year.  Because Easter happened to fall at the end of the quarter Chuck had to work several hours today.  Ruth went with Quaid to visit his grandparents and spend some time with them, then Quaid came for Easter Dinner and then we made cookies with the new cookie cutters I had made on the 3d printer this weekend.

I talked on the blog in January about how we were going to go to a new church on the 4th Sunday of every month.  So last week we went to a brand new church here in our town. It was a contemporary Christian type church and the service was enjoyable, and the pastor talked about Christ and his love and forgiveness, which was nice.  Since today was LDS conference, Chuck and I decided to visit the local Catholic church for their Easter service. I was hoping for some quality Easter choir music, but alas, their music was some man on a synthesizer leading all the hymns to a balsa nova beat, including saxophone synth interludes. It was really quite odd.    Speaking of conference, we were happy about all the changes that were announced.

Ruth got some good news this week.  A month ago she was recruited by, and then applied for the Business Scholars program at the U. This is like an honors fast-track program for business students that only takes about 30 students a year.   Ruth found out this week that, not only was she accepted to the program, but she was given a substantial 4-year scholarship as well.
